The school uses a selection from various reading schemes, which are carefully graded for each age group. Children choose their books from this range and teachers guide their choice towards specific skill‑development as necessary. All children are encouraged to take books home, and parents are encouraged to share books daily with their children. To strengthen links between home and school, teachers and parents comment in reading diaries provided by the school.
We have an agreed form of handwriting in school and the school encourages children to reach a high standard in written English. Drafting and re-drafting of work is encouraged and word-processing skills are developed from the beginning.
From Year 1 onwards the children are asked to learn spellings each week. These are closely related to work taking place in Literacy.
We encourage the children to be independent writers from the beginning, but also emphasise the importance of good spelling, handwriting and punctuation.
